Mother & Infant Scheme Information

The Mother & Infant Scheme does not cover the cost of GP out of hours consultations in NEDOC for pregnancy related consultations. A fee applies to patients who present with a pregnancy-related illness unless you have a medical card or a doctor visit card. The baby is not entitled to free medical care unless the baby has a medical card.

Under guidelines from the HSE, patients are advised that the Maternity & Infant Care Scheme covers the cost of 6 visits of a private patient to their chosen GP. Care for other illnesses which you may have at this time, but which are not related to your pregnancy, are not covered by this Scheme.

The scheme also covers the cost of two developmental examinations by your own GP at 2 weeks and 6 weeks following the birth. These examinations are not provided for in NEDOC.
