NEDOC Service Remains Open in Navan
GPs have agreed to maintain NEDOC services from the Navan centre, having received written assurance from the HSE that an alternate suitable premises would be found within 5 months.
The Board of NEDOC wrote to the HSE in October giving three months notice for the HSE to source suitable alternative accommodation for the service, or GPs would not work from the centre from 1st February.
According to Arlene Fitzsimons, Operations Manager, "the existing centre is 15 years old and a new centre had been promised each year since the inception of the serivce, but to no avail."
"However I am pleased to have received a written committment from the HSE that an alternative suitable premises will be sourced for the Navan NEDOC centre within a time-frame of five months. GPs in the area can now be satisfied that a defined deadline is in place for the delivery of the new centre".
Doctors working in the centre have consistently highlighted the poor conditions. It is too warm in summer and too cold in winter, with damp on the walls. The waiting room is too small, particularly during times of high demand, as patients have to stand while waiting to be seen, and bathroom facilities for patients are dreadful.
"Navan is our busiest centre, where we see over 16,000 patients per year. It is very important to GPs in the area that their patients are seen in a centre that is fit for purpose and allows them to be seen and treated with dignity in a suitable environment".
